23 Things for Professional Development –Thing 15: Attending presenting at and organising seminars, conferences and other events

This Thing couldn’t have come at a better time or maybe better to say I couldn’t have been reading it at a better time (because I am really behind in 23 Things now ) .

Why, because I have a workshop I am attending tomorrow at Bristol and the suggestions and advice are going to come in handy for me.
I am really excited about this because it’s the first time in about 5 years now I will be attending a conference or workshop outside my organisation. I have really missed that. I began my career in an atmosphere where attending conferences and presenting papers is the order of the day and there is an academic slang we had to‘publish or perish’. Even as a librarian you are expected to publish articles and books or you would not be able to move on in your career.

As a single girl, I was so enthusiastic and a sort of a go-getter. I remember a two-day conference I organised with a friend in 1998 and we had academics from all over the nation attend it. We decided to launch our own NGO then ‘Research in Information and Communication for the Woman in Africa (RICOWA)’ and the theme of the conference was ‘The Woman Question-An Update’ We had a book of conference proceedings published after this. This was really a huge success and I remember things moved so fast for me afterwards. It’s tricky sometimes what family cares do to women. I searched out the NGO name on the internet and still found it in some conference participants’ resumes online! (with my maiden name) Was I thrilled. Unfortunately, the internet was still practically new at that time otherwise we would have had a tidy website for it.
I can’t wait to do something like that again. This is what makes me tick. Perhaps I will look into the suggestions given in this Thing and volunteer in some committees of well-established conferences. I would really love that!
