23 Things for Professional Development - Thing 22: (Volunteering to get experience)

Have you undertaken unpaid work to further your career? What was your experience? Is volunteering a good thing, or by working for free are we in danger of devaluing our profession? Tell us what you think.

Volunteering in one’s own professional area is not endangering the values of our profession it’s rather a way of enhancing it. It is a way to show that we have passion for the profession and even though we do not expect or are not in the position to gain monetarily from serving, we can give back into the profession and add our own values to it. Unfortunately I haven’t had the opportunity to volunteer my service in the profession but I would do it if I’m given the chance.
I have tried volunteering my service twice when I came to the UK to gain the ‘UK experience’ but unfortunately I was rejected both times. I can’t now remember the excuse I was given for one but I remember I was told by the second organisation (public library) they do not want any more staff!

I have also at different times applied to volunteer at two different charity organisations, one is for domestic abuse victims and the other is for suicidal victims, part of the role is to keep contact with the assigned over the phone and being a friend in need for them.
I got a letter from one that someone would get in touch with me in my region but I haven’t heard from them in a while. Maybe I will follow these up now we are dealing with volunteering and even though it’s not my professional area it’s an area I am really interested in..

Other than that, I can’t say I have had any opportunity at volunteering my service in my professional area but it’s a noble thing to do.
