It’s really interesting to see the passion with which people have written about their roots and routes into librarianship in the Library Routes Project. I don’t want to repeat my own story as I’ve summarised it a bit in Thing 10.
I went through some people’s stories in Library Routes Project and it was so interesting. Many people came into librarianship through different routes and some are a bit similar to mine (because they had nothing really to do with the library before they became librarians) while some are so different because they had parents who had been librarians
Despite the disparity in the roots and routes stories I read, I found out two things are common: most librarians despite the fact that they did not know anything about the career before they plunged into it discovered it was the ‘It’ career for them. Every blog I read showed people who have passion and love for their profession and I noticed people said in so many different and varied ways they wouldn’t change their career for anything in the world, which shows that whether we make money or not in the career, librarians are a happy people
Librarianship is a helping career and anybody who has a passion for helping others would definitely be at home with the career. If you are not a compassionate person then the career is not for you. I am happy when people are happy after I have helped them and seeing the smile on their faces or hearing the ring of happiness in their thankful voices make my day.
